Sometimes I think life should be like golf and give you a Mulligan. The whole world should call a Mulligan for 2020, mostly because of the Covid-19 pandemic, but also for the climate situation. In fact, it would be nice to reset to 2010 but knowing what we do now, so we (I mean world leaders) would take action before it got this bad. I know, warnings it would come to this have gone unheeded for decades. Maybe we’ll listen now that we’re on a precipice and if we don’t act now the planet will soon be uninhabitable for most mammals including humans. If there’s one good thing to come out of the pandemic it’s that it shows us how rapidly air quality could improve if governments had the will. Let’s hope they find the will. Maybe we could make racism a thing of the past while we’re at it.
I was surprised to learn some great things have come out of past pandemics, notably, some of Shakespeare’s works, and Newton is quoted as saying 1665-1666 was “the prime of my age for invention and minded mathematics and [natural] philosophy more than at any time since.” He is credited with the invention of calculus. It’s thought he was in quarantine because of the plague at the time. Since we’ve been asked to stay home as much as possible, we should all be like Newton and Shakespeare and come up with a new play or new math. I was never good at math and haven’t written a play since I was in grade 7 (it was terrible) but I did finish a new book. It’s a little difficult to assign The Feeder to a genre, but since it has some nasty stuff in it, I guess it’s a thriller. I didn’t like it much at first, which is probably the reason I set it aside for nearly a year before picking it up again this past April. Now I’m pretty proud of it. It’s a story about relationships, new and old, and domestic abuse, so it has redeeming social value. At least in my opinion. Although I don’t recommend anyone getting out of an abusive relationship the way Carly did.
Now that The Feeder is at an end, I’m also at loose ends. I always feel this way when I have to say goodbye to characters I’ve been living with for months. A couple of my beta readers aren’t ready to let them go, either, and have told me it’s ripe for a sequel. I’ll give it some thought.
