You will need:

2 cups C.O.B. (sweet feed)

2 cups wheat or oat bran

1 cup flax seed

1 cup molasses

1 cup whole wheat or multi-grain flour

Mix together until you can form it into approximately one inch balls.  It’s okay for the “dough” to be kind of crummy as in the photo. Squeeze those balls until they stick together. (If you think that’s funny, you’re probably (a) female and (b) my kind of baker!)

Bake at 300 degrees F. for 30 to 45 minutes or until the cookies are VERY HARD. You’ll think they’re like rocks and your horse can’t possibly eat rocks, but it’s fine. The horses chomp them no trouble and look for more.

You can also add shredded carrots or apples, or even apple sauce but you’ll need to adjust the amount of bran or flour in order for the balls to stay, well, balls until they’re baked. The horses like the plain ones just fine and I see no reason to increase the cost by purchasing added ingredients, but if you want to, by all means fill your boots:)

Yield: approx. 40 – 50 horse cookies.
